would be there. Freeware.

Subject: [*] Carpetbag 1.4 package
Carpetbag is a shareware ($5) control panel extension that makes resources
such as fonts, sounds, FKEYs, and keyboard layouts available to your
programs without installing the resources in the System file. You specify
certain folders, and Carpetbag opens all resource files therein at boot
time. It works under System 6, but is smarter about keeping track of
folders under System 7. It should even be able to use a folder on a remote
Appleshare volume.
This file is in StuffIt 3.0 format. It can be decompressed with StuffIt
Expander (freeware) or anything in the StuffIt 3.0 family.
v. 1.4 New feature: A folder can be "postponed", which means that its
location is remembered but its files are not opened at startup.

Subject: [*] Emacs_310.sit.hqx 1/3
This is a Mac implementation of the text editor microEmacs.
(For people like me who has it's somewhat cryptic command
interface solidly stuck in our brain patterns.)
It's from 1989 and must have come from the Internet originally,
I found it on some Swedish local BBS.
No bugs to my knowledge (I haven't tested it too hard either). It
handles files 300-400 K without problems, though.
I still use system 6.0.5 and can't guarantee it's system 7 behaviour.
I'm using Disinfectant 3.2 for virus checking.
Archived by Stuff-it Lite.
Enjoy!

Version 1.1 already! Well, 9 months is a long time for Apple Computer
nowadays.
Machine Icons 1.1 contains a set of icons for all Macs (as at September
1993), and some peripheral hardware. Some have been drawn from scratch, and
some amended from System 7 (with acknowledgement to Apple Computer). A
full set of ICN#, icl4, icl8, ics#, ics4 and ics8 resoures are provided.
These icons are free, but if you enjoyed them, please send me a postcard of

response.

(T) for tangent: I've been kind of looking an Applied Engineering TransWarp
4300 board for my LC. This is a 40MHz 68030 with 128K static RAM cache
(basically the LC version of the board -- Applied Engineering (AE) board in
Allan Hunter's rant). All the comments I saw about it on the net were very
positive. LLB has it for about $370. When I called, though, the salesthing
told me they were getting lots of them coming back due to incompatibility
(due to the cache, I would guess), and it suggested a new Daystar 25MHz
68040 for about $410 which was guaranteed to have no incompatibilities and
would be faster than the TransWarp. I'm not convinced all these things are
true. Has anyone run speedometer on any of these, possibly in comparison to
the LCIII? Know of compatibility problems? With double processor speed (and
thus faster printing on my Personal LaserWriter LS), I could wait for the
PowerPC in comfort.

I agree. The aliases are a bit of hastle. For years the archives had

Subject: APS SCSI-doc and SyQuest drives (Q)
Hi there! I was wondering if anyone has gotten a SCSI-doc to work with
their 44MB SyQuest drives.
My setup is a PB100 2/20 (It's paid for!) running 7.1 with only speechmanager
(cool!) and AutoDoubler as extensions; and a Cutting Edge SyQuest drive.
Every
time I try and mount the cart (SCSI-probe), the mac lets me see it on the
desktop, but as soon as I try and open the disk, the whole mac freezes. APS
tech support reccomended zapping the PRAM, booting w/o extensions. Neither
of these fixes worked, in fact it ended up with me first destroying the
battery
monitor I had in the Startup items folder, and later, trashing the whole
system
(segment loader error). The last thing he recommended was to initialize the
disks with the same software I used to format the HD. The SyQ's were
formatted
with SilverLining, the HD is straight from Apple.
The adapter works fine in SCSI disk mode, in fact, that's how I reinstalled
the
system. At least that half works!
Tips and suggestions are appreciated, I will pass along any info that others
may
request!

I use MacX 1.1.7 and a Logitech MouseMan (MouseKey 1.0 Control Panel) on
my IIci. My final mouse button setup was to leave things the way they
are for the rest of the applications.
Ideally, the cursor keys should do what they do on any keyboard - move
the cursor left, right, up, or down. To do this in MacX, you have to
select the "Mouse Buttons Simulated By" "Option + Arrow Keys". This
means that the middle button is simulated by option+left-arrow, etc...
And that the left cursor move is just the left-arrow.
If you go into the MouseKey control panel, you can change the function
of the middle and right buttons to simulate the option+key for MacX
alone.
But somewhere between the MouseKey conversion and the MacX
interpretation of the middle-button-click, things get messed up. I
found that both the middle and right buttons worked sometimes, but in
general created more of a problem than they were worth. After clicking,
the button would get "stuck", like a click-lock, and in order to get out
I'd have to play with the option and first button.
One reason this might be happening is the use of the option key in MacX
- which is usually reserved for moving windows around - is confusing
when used in combination with other keys. Another possibility is that
the MouseKey CP is not interpreting the button clicks properly.
I'd be interested to find out other's (and your) solutions to this.

Subject: MaxFax INIT and Prefs problem
I recently bought the Prometheus Ultima Home Office for use with my SE/30
and have been tormented by a reoccuring crash on boot-up. The problem
points to the MaxFax INIT that came with the latest version of the MaxFax
software. If the INIT is the only INIT in the Extensions folder, the
system crashes on boot-up. IF the INIT is removed, everything is fine. If
I leave the INIT in the Extensions folder and trash the MaxFax Prefs file
(which is stored in the MaxFax Application folder, incidently) the system
will reboot normally.
I contacted Prometheus about this and it apparently is not a wide-spread
problem, although the applications engineer who talked with me, had the
same experience only a week prior to our conversation.
Am I looking at a bug or a non-feature?

Hello netters
I have no choice but to return to this beaten up theme.
After installing the upgrades to Word and Excel I understand why people are
flaming Micro$oft. The new programs are unacceptably slow on LC & LCII.
All the nice features are worth NOTHING if one has to wait for "ages" for
anything to happen. We have the same programs on PC Windows and they work
remarkably faster.
Until Micro$oft COMPILEs their programs for the Macintosh (instead of using
P-Code with interpreter) I can not recommend these products to anyone; no
matter how nice are the features they offer ;^|
I would like to join the MFZ league.

Subject: Non-Powerbook File Synching?
I'm looking for the wisdom of experience;
During the course of any given day me and my data may start from my home
Mac (not networked) and travel to a handful of guest-host (networked) Macs.
I'd like to know what others do to make sure that duplicates of
files-in-progress are all up to date.
The Powerbook-crowd has Zync and other similar utilities. What do
non-Powerbook users use?
Are there any backup/archiving programs (eg DiskFit or Retrospect) that can
be used for this purpose?
Given enough response I'll summarize in a FAQ format.
Thanks!

Subject: Original Mac II video card pin-out
Mac Gurus,
I need to get info on how to connect a Multisync monitor to a Mac IIX
with a High Resolution Display Video Card (the original card for the
Mac II line, I believe). My monitor gave up the ghost, and down here
in Argentina it is prohibitively expensive to have it repaired. I do
however, have access to a variety of PeeCee type monitors, both
VGA, SVGA and multisync types. Since my assignment here is about
to end, I want to borrow one of those for the time being. My problem
is that I dont have the proper pinout to connect such beasts.
Anyone out there ?
Thanks,

Subject: Public Utilities demo (WARNING)
I also tried this demo, and I must report the problems caused by this
software.
I have a MacPlus (don't laugh, a Centris 650 is on the way :-> )
system 6.0.7 and a 105MB disk partitioned with SilverLining.
Oh, yes, and I have Norton Utilities since it was first offered, including
the last upgrades (yes, I know the "version numbers by the hour" - dirty
trick).
1. Public Utilities demo was VERY slow on my machine.
2. It stopped dead (well, crashed) just after finishing the first test
(volume info)
3. After 15 "dead" minutes I rebooted - My system disappeared!
All 3 partitions were recognized, but my mac sat there
showing me a question mark.
4. Rebooted from Norton Utilities Emergency diskette. All partitions seen..
5. Run DiskDoctor - The Boot Blocks and Volume Information Blocks
were DAMAGED!
6. After repairing this - Reboot failed again.
7. Rebooted from system 6.07 install kit.
8. The system folder on my system disk was NOT "blessed".
I "touched" the finder/system and saw the folder "blessed" again.
9. Now my MAC works as before.
OK. I have an ancient computer with an old system. But I expect a disk
REPAIR utility to check its environment and behave properly.
This is not to say that Norton Utilities are perfect. The contrary is true!
I had Norton Utilities DESTROY my disk TWICE. When the disks are FULL to
the brim, any replacement of the DeskTop or other control files is bound to
get stuck without enough disk space. NU crashed me in these situations
causing total loss of all data. That's the reason I tried the "other one".
So be warned

Subject: Quantum 105S keep losing it's directory
Hello all Mac dudes...
We recently installed a Quantum 105S (104MB) as the internal drive in
a Mac SE. However, it crashed a few weeks ago for some unexplained
reason (on a weekend) and we had to re-format the drive an re-install
all system and application software.
Not two weeks after this, the disk lost its directory tree again (not
lost, I mean damaged). Is there a conflict between the SE and the
105S? Apple's formatter won't work on the drive, and I tried Drive 7
but the software will not run (tells me not enough memory - try
closing some windows). The SE has 4 MB RAM.
Any clues, please let me know.

I didn't mean to malign Desktop Reset (I was maligning Reset DTDBs ;) but
my technique still saves you from having to hold down the Command and
Option keys, which is a pain on my system which has 125 inits. I've got
better things to do than watch icons crawl across my screen. There's

Subject: Screen Jitters (R)
I had that problem until recently with a series of Macs and PCs.
The screens would vibrate like jello. Very annoying.
The problem was due to "bad power" in the building. It is an old
dorm that was converted (not very well, though) to a University
adminstrative office building. The wiring was exposed, unshielded
and not in conduit. The electric supply was tasked by hundreds of
PC and a main air conditioning unit--none of which was envisioned
when the building was constructed, of course.
The problem actually was low frequency RF radiated from the wiring
to the monitor. (We know this because we had the problem even when
the computers were operated on a UPS and completely disconnected from
building power.) Lots of solutions were proposed and attempted.
None worked.
We solve the problem just this week. It wasn't a cheap solution, but
it was the only thing that worked. We moved. We are now in a modern
building with adaquate power running in conduit. We have cable trays,
conduit and power separated from communications wiring. The screen is
solid as a rock!

Well, over a year ago now, I tried out a demo version of SoftPC (I
think it was SoftAT, in fact) at a local dealer. The demo was marked
for CD-ROM distribution and indeed shipped on a CD-ROM; it was fully
functional other than that it would automatically quit after 10 minutes,
and didn't include the drivers for PC CD-ROMs. So demos do exist (or have
existed) and Insignia may well not mind them appearing on archive sites.

According to Insignia, that version was fully-functional (no 10 minute
limit) and not a "demo". It was never available to the public, either.
I repeat: I have talked to Insignia, there is no "demo" version of
SoftPC, and they really, really do mind if it is distributed publicly.
If you don't believe me, call and ask them yourself. (Or write insignia@
netcom.com.)
BTW: The version that was posted to mac.archive.umich.edu was rather
obviously a commercial version. It had a regular serial number
(AT-290024309/001), and was licensed to "xf" of company "fdgf" (which
suggests someone had to enter a name, but didn't want to use his own).
Also, the title of the main window was changed to read "SoftAT - For
Demonstration Only". Insignia has told me that _they_ never made any
version like that, and they confirmed to me, after seeing a copy of the
umich file, that it was a crude alteration of their commercial product.
I guess the moral is: if you do send in files to the archives, make sure they
are legally distributable. If the archives are found to contain major
commercial applications like SOftPC, the sites running them might get sued.

After reading that the new sound goodies work on a lowly SE, I
downloaded the various files to give it a try. I didn't get
much for my efforts. Keep in mind that I am using an accelerated

caused an unimplemented trap error on startup. And the sound
control panel "Cannot be used with this Macintosh." I.e., nothing worked.
Any idea if I can use SM3 and Speach Manager on my machine? Thanks,

Subject: Strange ARA problem
We have a single Mac IIci acting as an ARA server for our department.
Recently,
because we wanted to move the machine to a different location, we switched the
network card in it from an Asante MacCon II+64T (10-BaseT) to the II+64
(ThinNet).
The local user of that machine says everything works fine with the ThinNet
card,
but remote users have problems: certain machines don't show up in the Chooser
(or take a very long time), and -- far more importantly -- they can't log in
to
our mail server (WP Office 3.0.1, which uses the ADSP portion of the DAL
extension). Switching back to the 10-BaseT card (which involves stringing a
wire across a doorway, so it's not a permanent solution) makes everything work
right again.
I've tried everything: re-installing ARA, re-installing the
Ethernet/EtherTalk
drivers, and so forth. Called Asante and the technician had no suggestions
that
helped.
If anyone has any kind of suggestion, I'd be glad to hear it; this one has me
baffled.

Daniel, SilverLining 5.31 is not a real good choice for System 7. Try
the 5.42 version, the latest I have.
And whether you initialize a disk with SilverLining or ETC or whatever
else, Apple's HD SC Setup refuses to see the drive. It's a feature.

Steve,
I had a similar problem on my IIvi. I finally tracked it down to the
Apple keyboard - it had a dry joint on one of the ADB sockets.
The Power on line is pulled high (or low - I can't remember) by the keyboard
so a bad connection on this line allows the line to float and switch on
randomly or always.
Just re-solder all the connections of the ADB sockets on the keyboard.
Of course there could be a keyboard cable problem or even an ADB socket
problem on the motherboard (God forbid!)
Good Luck
Peter
